Concert held tonight at Kings’ Shops

Kings’ Shops will hold the second Ke Aloha Summer concert at 6 p.m. today.

Kaea Lyons of KAPA Hawaiian FM will host the show and the featured artist will be Kris Fuchigami. Hula Halau Waiau led by kumu Keikilani Curnan will perform kahiko hula during the interlude.

Many Kings’ Shops tenants will be out in street-fair fashion with their art and merchandise on display.

Waimea Arts Council announces juried art show

The Waimea Arts Council invites artists to enter its 30th annual Helen M. Cassidy Memorial Juried Art Show held Oct. 1 through 25 at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea. Entries must be brought in between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sept. 28. The show will be exhibited through October.

This year’s judges are Hawi Gallery owner Richard Bodien and Volcano Art Center gallery manager Shelby Smith.

The art competition and exhibition is open to all Hawaii Island artists age 18 and older. In order for pieces to be juried into the show artists must be members of the Waimea Arts Council. Membership is $25 annually and open to individuals and businesses that support the purpose of the organization. All media will be accepted. Entries will be judged using five criteria: originality, visual balance, visual clarity, personal expression and execution of the medium. Cash awards will be announced at the reception Oct. 4.

Big Island Film Festival announces script-writing contest

Long before the lights and cameras come to life, movie action starts on paper with a fine-tuned craft of screenwriting. In celebration of the screenplay, Big Island Film Festival at The Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii has announced its first feature film script contest, with top entries saluted at the 10th annual festival held May 21 through 25. The winning script will be submitted to the Paradigm Agency in Hollywood for possible representation.

Scripts must be submitted no later than Feb. 1 and must be between 60 and 140 pages in standard screenplay format.

Professional readers will screen all submissions by reviewing the first 10 pages, to select nine semi-finalists. Of those, three finalists will be evaluated by veteran screenwriters, instructors and consultants and one winner selected.

Dance auditions held for “The Nutcracker”

West Hawaii Dance Theatre and Academy will be holding auditions for “The Nutcracker ” Saturday at its main studio at 74-5626 Alapa St., Bay 15. Ages 5 through 8 will audition at 2 p.m., ages 9 through 12 at 2:30 and teens and adults at 3.

Rolls to be cast include angels, toy soldiers, mice, party girls and boys, party parents, and a host of other sweets for the Land of the Sweets. The main Performance is held Dec. 22 at Kahilu Theatre. Additional mini performances are scheduled at various West Hawaii locations throughout December.
